An identity code, or ticker, allocated to a company by the exchange on which its stock is traded. Usually the code is an abbreviation of the companys name, e.g. VOD = Vodafone Group, in London. Unfortunately all exchanges and symbol systems do not use the same codes. Knowledge of the symbols can speed up the search for stock prices on the internet.
